Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
