Sports Champions Call on Iranian Authorities to Halt Execution of Champion Boxer

More than twenty Olympic champions, coaches and other global sports figures have signed a letter calling for a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and coach, who is facing execution in the country.

Escalating International Outrage

Amid rising global condemnation over Iran’s escalating use of executions as a instrument of suppression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the authorities's decision to uphold the capital punishment of the athlete.

The athlete, thirty, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for participating in national uprisings in the year 2019 and accused of supporting an opposition group. He has spent half a decade in detention, where he has been tortured and confined in seclusion.

“Sport is intended to inspire optimism, unity, and bravery,” the endorsers wrote. “The capital punishment of a winner for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these principles and a caution to any competitor who attempts to voice opinions.

History of Executing Athletes

The statement said that the boxer's situation was not unique and underscored the country's record of executing athletes for their convictions, including Habib Khabiri, skipper of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year national competitor, faced the death penalty.

Further supporters to the appeal include Tracy Edwards, who led the pioneering women's squad in a global yacht race and was the initial female to be awarded a renowned sailing award; the former leader of the soccer side an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the Iranian squad for the international competition.

Apprehension and Unfair Trial

The athlete was detained in the spring of 2020. The accusations against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of public property”. His ruling has been overturned multiple times but on 4 October it was upheld on the third attempt. His court case was condemned as “deeply biased” by advocates and groups.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to stop Vafaei Sani’s capital punishment comes after a earlier appeal to the UN high commissioner for human rights, backed by more than one hundred rights specialists and organizations, calling for measures to avert the sports figure's execution.

Execution Crisis

Based on data, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has attained horrific dimensions”. In 2023, the government sentenced at least over 850 people – a nearly half increase on 2022. Last year, data showed nearly a thousand deaths, marking the maximum count since two thousand fifteen. In excess of 800 people have been sentenced so far in 2025.
